Garryowen Community Development Project Advances Plans for Community Centre

For decades the Community of Garryowen have been advocating for a Community Centre for the area. Securing this for the Community has been a long-standing aim of the Garryowen Community Development Project. We are excited to share with you that we are working with other relevant bodies to make this happen.

However, there are still some steps to get through to make it a reality.

In 2025 a Steering Group was put together  made up of all relevant bodies including Schools, Sports Clubs, residents reps, Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, The Children and Young Persons Services Committee, TUSLA, HSE, Limerick Sports Partnership, Limerick Youth Service, Garryowen CDP, Limerick Childcare Committee  and Limerick City Partnership, supported by Limerick City and County Council.

Since its formation, the Steering Group has been actively exploring practical pathways to progress the development of a community centre. Working closely with Limerick City and County Council, the group has now developed an initial proposal, including the identification of a potential site.

  • Childcare facilities
  • Supports for older residents
  • Youth activities and programmes
  • Family support services
  • Community Gym
  • Community Café
  • Indoor and outdoor sports facilities

The proposed community centre, when realised, could provide a wide range of essential services and amenities, including:

Over recent months, Garryowen CDP and the Steering Committee have held a series of briefings with residents, local councillors, including schools, sports clubs and community groups, and other interested parties to present the potential ideas and gather feedback.

The next phase of the project involves securing funding to appoint specialist experts to further develop the proposal to a more advanced stage, including design, feasibility, and planning. There will be extensive community consultation when we get to this stage of the process.

While these developments represent exciting progress, Garryowen CDP emphasises that the project remains at an early, conceptual stage. The delivery of a community centre will depend on a range of factors, including securing funding, obtaining planning permission, and successfully navigating further development stages.

Garryowen CDP and the Steering Committee remain fully committed to continuing this process and advocating for the needs of the Garryowen community.

We will be seeking community involvement and input throughout this process, for further information or queries, please contact:
